The derelict chapel in the North Road Cemetery has been restored and is being managed by SAVS for and on behalf of the community. The building has been restored using EU funding via the Build with Care Project. The project has utilised methods in keeping with the original building and has incorporated features designed to improve sustainability and reduce future running costs.
The redundant chapel has won a vibrant new lease of life thanks to almost £1m of Government funding. The grant, from The Office of The Third Sector and administered by the Big Lottery Fund, was used to transform the dilapidated building into a dynamic new community resource.
Alison Semmence, SAVS Chief Executive Officer, said: “This is great news for Southend’s Voluntary and Community Sector.
“We are delighted to be a part of the project which, not only restores the chapel, but also provides a valuable resource for the community. A meeting room and office space are available to hire. Please contact us on 01702 356005 for more information.”
