Mayors are in office for one year from the 2nd Thursday in May each year. The current Mayor is Councillor Ann Holland.

The current protocol is that the Councillor who has served the longest (irrespective of Party), who wishes to be Mayor, is elected Deputy Mayor and then automatically becomes Mayor the following year.

The role of the Mayor is purely ceremonial. They do continue to carry out some Ward work, but there must be no confusion about it and must be in their role as Councillor and not Mayor.

The Mayor attends about 600 engagements each year, such as:

  • Walking Buses
  • Opening new businesses
  • Seeing many of the Amateur Dramatic productions
  • Opening the High Street French and Italian Markets
  • Visiting the University, College, schools etc
  • Formal visits to most of the other Authorities in Essex
  • Many Charity events being held at Porters or other sites in town
  • Chairing Council
  • Presiding over Citizenship Ceremonies
  • Supporting the Airshow

Generally speaking the Mayor's job is similar to a PR job. The Mayor travels in the Civic Car with a number plate of HJ1.

More information to follow- Further enquiries should be made directly to the Mayor’s Office.
