ABOUT TURNING TIDES

Turning Tides is a project of Southend Association of Voluntary Services (SAVS) and carries out communitybased projects in conjunction with partner organisations. Turning Tides promotes active citizenship and offers a range of activities for young people living in disadvantged areas of Central  Southend.  The project encourages involvement in social activites, volunteering, trainingand environmental projects.  All  of the Turning Tides Team are Community Safety Accredited.

Turning Tides began the Triple T's project in April  2011 which is funded by BBC Children in Need.  Our  Team Leaders are  delivering weekly clubs for children aged 8-12 and targetted workshops for young people aged 13-16 years.  The Clubs are held at Centre Place on the Woodgrange Estate and also the Unitarian Meeting  House in Grange Gardens.   Hayley and Jo deliver  these clubs along with a team of local volunteers and will give youngsters the chance to try out new activities.

Turning Tides has also received funding from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund and we will be delivering personalised transport plans in targeted areas of Southend.   Personalised travel planning is all about recognising barriers to using different forms of transport and our Team Leaders and teams of Volunteers will be offering support and information to break these barriers down.   The pilot of this project has just begun in the Milton and St Laurence wards before going live in April.

The Active Citizen Programme also continues.  'Make Your Mark' Active Citizens is a pilot programme developed on behalf of the LSP (Southend Together) with representation, at grassroots level, from Turning Tides Team Leaders Hayley Duff and Lee Bagnall.  Our Team  These identified residents are supported to build networks and become involved in improving their neighbourhood.   Active Citizens also receive personal development training from SACC.

ESSEX POLICE AWARD FOR TURNING TIDES

Turning Tides was delighted to receive an award on behalf of Essex Police from Inspector Leigh Norris of Southend Police e to celebrate that the team have had their Community Safety Accreditaton for five years.  The Accreditation means that they can share intelligence with the Police.

Jenny Ayres, Essex Police Community Safety Accreditation Scheme Officer said "Turning Tides has been accredited for five years so this award was given in recognition of the work they carry out in the Community".

Anthony Quinn, Turning Tides Manager added, "The Accreditation has given Turning Tides more credibility.  It also enhances our work with the police and other agencies who continue to support the scheme".

PERSONALISED TRAVEL PLANNING

Turning Tides is delivering PTP in Southend with funding from the Southend Local Sustainable Trainspoprt Fund programme delivered by Southend Borough Council and funded by the Department of Transport.

Personalised Travel Planning is engaging local communities around transport to gain insight to local issues and recognise barriers to using different forms of transport.  Our Team Leaders with teams of local Travel Advisor volunteers will be providing help and advice with travel and transport queries.

This pilot project will begin in Milton and St Laurence wards. Then the scheme is due to be rolled out across the borough over the next two years.

Travel Advisor Volunteers and Turning Tides Team leaders have now become fully trained travel planners.  To assist their work they have also been given Bikeability training and bicycles to help them get around Southend.  As well as calling at households, they will take part in community events. Their brief is to discuss current travel arrangements and offer tailored advice and information about walking, cycling and public transport alternatives to all.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s Executive Councillor for Public Protection, Waste and Transport, Councillor Tony Cox said: “We are very grateful indeed to our terrific volunteers who have undertaken very detailed training to enable them to offer the very best transport advice for residents.

“They aim to help make travelling around cheaper, easier and healthier for individuals and for families.  In addition, they will feed back any comments from residents to help improve sustainable transport options in the area.  They will also be able to direct residents to specific services to help them make the best use of transport opportunities. Travel Advisor Volunteers and Turning Tides Team Leaders will carry personal identification and will be easy to recognise by their red jacket uniforms".

At the scheme’s official launch, the Worshipful, the Mayor of Southend, Councillor David Norman presented certificates to the volunteers to acknowledge their achievements in completing their training, and to help boost their efforts as they venture forth into the community.

HOME FIRE SAFETY PROJECT

A new partnership initiative has been launched in Southend to enhance Essex County Fire and Rescue Service’s (ECFRS) home fire safety visits scheme. A partnership between ECFRS and Southend Association of Voluntary Services (SAVS) sees the local charity managing a team of volunteers on ECFRS' behalf.  The team of trained volunteers will add to the existing work carried out by ECFRS by fitting life saving smoke alarms in the homes of elderly and vulnerable people.

The volunteers are all drawn from the local community and for many it is the first time they have been involved in volunteering. So far, 13 volunteers have been given special training and over the last two weeks the first visits have taken place with smoke alarms installed in more than a dozen homes in the Southend area, where the scheme is being piloted for six months.

“I saw an advert in the local paper and thought that it was something I might like to do. I am used to dealing with all kinds of different people from my old job on the buses,” says volunteer Ray Smith, 69, a retired bus driver.

“It is a good idea. It promotes fire safety and gets me out and meeting people. I have made friends through the scheme just by meeting the other volunteers and it is very satisfying to go out and do something that helps others.”

David Coram, 65, is a retired airport firefighter, bringing years of fire service experience to his role as a volunteer. He said: “I retired in April and when I heard about this scheme, I knew it was ideal for me.

“I know from my experience how important smoke alarms are and I have the time to get out and help make sure people are safer in their homes.”

Paul Gill, 43, had already been working with SAVS on other schemes. “They approached me and asked if this was something I would like to do,” he said. “It was a new area for me and is something where I can get out and help vulnerable people from my community.”

Richard Glass, 63, a retired gas fitter, had heard about the scheme through his wife who volunteers at local hospitals feeding people who are unable to feed themselves. “As a gas fitter I know how to use tools and fitting smoke alarms is quite straight forward for me,” said Richard. “We have already been out fitting smoke alarms and so far there hasn’t been a single working smoke alarm in any of the houses I have visited.

“They have all been broken or had the batteries taken out, leaving people vulnerable. The alarms we fit last for ten years, are very easy to operate and test and are ideal for the elderly people who we are fitting them for.”

All of the volunteers have been provided with a uniform and ID badge as well as special training into how to fit smoke alarms and deliver appropriate fire safety information. They can explain to clients how important it is to fit and regularly test smoke alarms.

ECFRS’ Deputy Chief Fire Officer and Deputy Chief Executive Gordon Hunter said: “This scheme allows us to expand the amount of work we do in the community.  It is not here to replace work currently being done by our firefighters or our existing home fire safety technicians.

“In the current economic climate, it makes even more sense to work more closely with partners, including the voluntary sector.  By using this extra capacity of volunteers we can add more value with minimal costs.

“SAVS will use their existing community contacts to ensure that the scheme targets the most vulnerable people in the community and these are the very people that need smoke alarms most of all.

“We are pleased to be working with a reputable charity like SAVS and I believe that this partnership will enable both ECFRS and SAVS to use their different strengths to help us reach as many vulnerable people as possible and save lives. The scheme is running as a pilot until March 2012, and if it proves to be the success we think it will be, I hope it will expand across the county next year.   I believe we will see more and more schemes like this in the future. This is the Big Society in action.”

Alison Semmence, SAVS Chief Executive Officer, said: “Through working with the 297 voluntary and community sector groups who are members of  SAVS, we are able to reach the most vulnerable people in Southend.  Our members will be able to provide us with referrals of the hardest to reach people in our area to enable our volunteers to carry out the Home Safety visits and thus save lives.”

The volunteers are now in their third week and all are enjoying the experience. “Everyone is glad to see us,” said Ray. “We not only fit an the smoke alarm but we have a chance to chat with them and make sure they are generally OK.

“I think this scheme will really take off. Everyone wants to be safe in their home and everyone likes something for nothing and that is just what we are offering.”

None of the volunteers will turn up unannounced. All appointments are pre-booked and all volunteers wear a special uniform and carry ID badges to ensure the security of their customers.

Volunteers need to be able to commit to two days per week and should be from the Southend area.  For information about how to get involved please contact Anthony Quinn at SAVS on 01702 356072.

'MAKE YOUR MARK' ACTIVE CITIZENS

Active Citizen Celebration Event

The Active Citizen Programme, 'Make Your Mark' is a pilot  programme developed on behalf of the LSP (Southend  Together) with representation, at grassroots level, from  Turning Tides Team Leaders Hayley Duff and Lee Bagnall.  Our Team Leaders engage with individuals in prescribed  streets and identified active community members.  We are  currently engaging in St Helen's - Milton ward.  These identified  residents are supported to build networks and become    involved in improving their neighbourhood.  Active Citizens  also receive personal development training from Southend Adult Community College.

The programme is now over eighteen months old and 34 Active Citizens have taken the opportunity to get invovled across Southend.  To acknowledge this success, Turning Tides organised a Celebration held at the 'Big Society Department Store' in Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff. The Event brought together Active
Citizens, Turning Tides, Southend Together and Southend Adult Community College (SACC) to share their experiences and strengthen the network.

Active Citizens each received a certificate presented by Steven Lay, Principal of SACC.  The catering and premises were provided by Active Citizens, Loveletta Mbandla and Eileen O'Connor.

Stephen White, Active Citizen in Chelmsford Avenue said, "being an Active Citizen has brought people in our street closer together and gets us talking and sharing ideas.  It can be a challenge trying to improve things but it's very rewarding getting things done; making a better street to live in".

Hayley Duff, Turning Tides Team Leader said "I have enjoyed meeting and supporting people that really care about the place they live and through supporting each other, things can be achieved for the better".

Active Citizens are trained and active in Valkyrie Road, Southchurch Road, York Road, Westborough Road, Chelmsford Avenue, St Luke's Road, Princes Street.  Our next targetted street is St Helen's Road.

Turning Tides Manager, Anthony Quinn said "The team have worked hard to improve over the past year.  We aim to invest in our staff and are thankful to our partner, Southend Adult Community College who support to Hayley and Lee where needed".
