Celebrating 2 years of COPD Drop In’s and Stretch & Breathe

Published on: July 24, 2025

This month the ‘COPD Drop In’ and ‘Stretch & Breathe’ groups proudly celebrated their 2nd anniversary marking two years of meaningful connections, education and movement.

The exercise session was led by Active Life and supported by Southend City Council – Public Health. Stretch & Breathe classes have become a vital lifeline for many living with chronic respiratory conditions, helping participants improve mobility, reduced breathlessness and build confidence through gentle, guided exercise.

The special birthday session bought over 40 people together all of whom enjoyed a fun an energising class tailored to support lung health and well-being.

After the session the celebration continued with a delicious spread provided by the Shoebury Youth and Community Centre Cafe. There was laughter, storytelling, and a wonderful sense of community spirit as participants shared their journeys and reflected on the progress they’ve made together.

“ It has a brilliant structure to it; better than any groups I have been to.”

“ I come from Westcliff as it helps me so much. It is a wonderful group of people.”

“ I am one of the COPD Community Connectors and the best thing is just chatting and meeting new people , talking to people who can understand what you are going through . COPD is not a visible condition so people cannot understand what you are going through unless you experience it yourself and talk about it.”

“The exercises are wonderful, first class and really help.”

“I have only been coming for a few weeks and was so happy with the welcome I received from everyone, it’s a great community.”

“It helps people not to be isolated, I’ve made a lot of friends coming.”
