Who can have a Home Safety Visit?
Anyone living in Essex can have a free Home Safety Visit with Essex County Fire and Rescue Service.

You don’t have to be considered vulnerable, but a visit could be particularly useful if you or someone you know:
Lives alone
Is older or has mobility difficulties
Has hearing or sight loss
Smokes
Uses oxygen or medical equipment
Has difficulty getting out of the home quickly
Has recently had a change in health or circumstances
Is worried about fire safety at home
Doesn’t have working smoke alarms

You can book a visit for yourself or on behalf of someone else.

What happens when we visit?
1. We come to you – A member of our Home Safety Team or local firefighter will visit your home at a time that’s convenient for you.

2. We look around together – We’ll talk to you about your home and identify anything that could increase the risk of fire.

3. We’ll give you practical advice – We’ll explain simple things you can do to make your home safer.

4. We’ll check your smoke alarms – If you don’t have working smoke alarms, we’ll provide and fit them free of charge.

5. We’ll help with anything else you might need – Depending on your circumstances, we can provide additional safety equipment or refer you to other support services.
