Our Safe and Well Visits are designed to help those who are most at risk of having a fire at home, and are carried out by specialist Safe and Well Officers. They can…

Fit free smoke alarms:
Our Safe and Well Officers can fit smoke detectors and specialist sensory alarms if required. They risk assess each home they visit, ensuring that there are working alarms in the most appropriate places.

Talk about fire safety:
As you would expect, SWOs talk about the importance of having working smoke alarms, knowing escape routes and discuss the changes to behaviour or property that might help someone to live more safely from fire in the home. They cover everything that would ordinarily be discussed in a Home Safety Visit.

Talk about burglary prevention:
They are also able to talk about basic home security, focusing on reducing the risk of burglary. This can include advice and information about the security of doors and windows, where keys are kept and an assessment of the perimeter of the property. They also deliver key personal safety messages, particularly in relation to doorstep fraud.

Order falls prevention equipment:
If a resident cannot easily move around their property, Officers can offer to order a range of equipment such as grab rails. These items can increase a resident’s mobility, therefore increasingly their likelihood of escaping their property in the event of a fire.

Find more help if it’s needed:

Finally, Safe and Well Officers have a good knowledge of the support structure in place all over Essex, for a range of health and wellbeing factors, from mental health to smoking cessation. If our Officers can’t help, chances are we know who can.
