Recycling Champions: Folk Like Us Collect Thousands of Blister Packs
Published on: August 5, 2025
Pill packets/blister packs are often made of a combination of plastic and foil and are therefore generally not recyclable through standard household recycling programs. However, some pharmacies offer specialised recycling for these items. The Folk Like Us members have consciously been collecting their blister packs for the last six months, ready to pass these onto a local pharmacy for recycling – saving them from landfill. Well done team!
Heather Ward, Project Co-ordinator at SAVS (Southend Association of Voluntary Services) said:
“The Folk Like Us members, along with SAVS staff and volunteers, have been bringing in their empty blister packs since the beginning of the year and so far over 3,000 packs have been collected – ready for a new lease of life! This is just one initiative SAVS has taken to improve its Environmental Policy and to date, and the Folk Like Us team where thrilled to get involved.”
Folk Like Us is a community project based in Southend, funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and hosted by SAVS. It offers free support and social opportunities to people aged 55 and over who are experiencing loneliness or social isolation. Click here to find out more.
