Hamlet Court Road Gearing up for Festival on Sunday 26th May!

Published on: May 9, 2024

Plans are well underway for the third In Harmony Festival on Hamlet Court Road at the end of May. The road will be closed to traffic for the day, and a stage will be set up on the corner of Ditton Court Road. There will be 50 stalls lining the road, including local businesses and a wide range of Southend based charities and local groups.

Soul singer Dawnette Fessey will be headlining the Festival. Other musical acts include Steel Here steel-pan band, Priscilla Bailey and the Hungarian Choir. The crowds will be entertained by dancers from the Essex Tamils, Bollywood Dancers and spoken word artists.

Kay Mitchell, Chair of ‘In Harmony,’ said:

“It is so heartening to see the community come together around the festival forming new connections and taking forward new ideas around Hamlet Court Road. The previous two festivals have paved the way for this community endeavour to grow and there is a real buzz about the festival this year.”

Matt King from the In Harmony Committee and chair of Milton Community Partnership said:

“We are really excited to be organising the street festival again, which promises to be even bigger and better than the previous two festivals. Our eclectic array of talent including dancers, spoken word artists and musicians will have something for everyone. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity of Hamlet Court Road and Westcliff, helping bring the community together to enjoy food, music, culture, creativity and to discover the amazing assets in our local area. We are grateful to A Better Start Southend, Rosca Trust and Southend Community Investment Board for helping to make this event possible once again, as well as the amazing artists, charities and community groups who will be spending the day with us.”

Cheryl Greenway from A Better Start Southend said:

“We are thrilled to be hosting an Early Years and Family Zone at the In Harmony Festival. The zone will be all about family wellbeing, with lots of activities for young children to get involved, play, explore and have fun. In the zone, there will also be a storytelling and quiet area so that all young children can enjoy different activities and get involved in a range ways.”

The In Harmony Festival will be on Sunday 26th May between 12 noon and 4 pm on Hamlet Court Road.

In the week running up to the festival, an art trail will be held on Hamlet Court Road, with local artists exhibiting in the windows of the shops and cafes up and down the road.
