HARP responds to 17% rise in homelessness across Essex and urges public support this Christmas

HARP, Essex’s leading homelessness charity, has expressed deep concern following the release of new figures from Crisis charity last week showing a 17% rise in homelessness across the county.
The increase highlights growing pressures on individuals and families facing homelessness, driven by the rising cost of living, housing shortages and ongoing financial insecurity. HARP says the figures underline the urgent need for sustained support for frontline services as winter approaches.
“We are seeing first-hand how difficult life has become for people who are already vulnerable,” said Vanessa Hemmings, CEO at HARP. “A 17% rise is not just a statistic – it represents real people in our communities who are struggling to find safety, stability and a place to call home.”
HARP provides street outreach, a day centre for people sleeping rough, accommodation, and support to independence for people experiencing homelessness across Essex. Demand for its services has continued to grow throughout the year, with winter presenting particular challenges due to cold weather, increased health risks and isolation.
As the Christmas period approaches, HARP is appealing to local residents, businesses and community groups to support its work. Donations and fundraising help ensure people experiencing homelessness can access warm accommodation, essential support and hope for a better future.
“Christmas is a time of kindness and community,” Vanessa added. “For people facing homelessness, that kindness can be life-changing. Public support allows us to continue providing vital services and to be there when people need us most.”
HARP encourages anyone who is able to support its Christmas appeal to donate, fundraise or spread awareness of the charity’s work.
