Good News Stories from our Community Builders (February 2024)

Community Builder, Chiquitta Bruce was at St.Mark’s Church helping Fiona from Trust Links, Ecodays project, focusing on tidying up the garden area.

The fallen leaves were swept for litter and put into the garden. Attention was given to the raised beds, adding perlite, leaf litter and fine composted bark to help with drainage. The group planted with sedums, which are very drought tolerant and attract lots of insects and then a final sprinkle of native wildflower seeds.

Chiquitta said:

“Volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got to work determined to spruce up the neighbourhood. People of all ages came to volunteer their time, from young children to adults and everyone chipped in to make a positive difference in their surroundings, with a goal of making the place a cleaner, nicer place to live.  One of the best parts was seeing children learn about plant how plant care using the leaves that they swept to add nutrition to the existing shrubs. Everyone did a bit of everything, raking leaves, picking up litter, planting flowers and clearing out weeds.

We took a well deserved break halfway through for snacks and drinks and this allowed an opportunity for further socialising. With renewed energy we finished the job with a final litter pick of the general area and by the end of the day it looked so much better and it felt great to have worked together as a community.”
