Community Builder Good News Story: COPD Thank You Celebration

On the 19th of June I had the pleasure of going along to a celebration organised by the volunteers from the former breathing support project-COPD Connectors, now named the COPD ACORNS, because of the saying about, “The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.” They started as a small group and have achieved great things for people living with COPD.

Although the original project itself had come to an end, it had been such a success that the volunteers decided to keep the group going, continuing to support one another and welcoming anyone else living with breathing difficulties.

It was so lovely to see everyone come together to celebrate the person who had supported and guided them along the way. There were hand-stitched banners, handmade bunting covered in thank-you messages, plenty of home baked cakes and the planting of the plant – all created as a heartfelt thank you to Sara who led the project.

The group quoted, “A big thank you to Sara for improving the quality of our lives…you strengthened our resolve to continue to fight for better COPD services and to help and support anyone with a chronic lung condition.” For me, that’s the real measure of a successful project. It’s not just about what happens while it’s running, but what happens afterwards. When people feel connected and confident enough to carry it on themselves, you know something special has been created.

Sara said, “I’m so grateful to have been invited to such a special afternoon. It was a real privilege to work alongside such an inspiring group of people, and I’ll always treasure the experience. Although I’m no longer involved, I’m absolutely delighted to see the project continuing and know it will keep making a positive difference. Thank you for your kindness, your support, and for such a lovely celebration—it meant a great deal to me.”

If you have breathing difficulties, or know someone who does, why not get in touch with the COPD ACORNS and find out more? You’ll be welcomed by people who understand, can offer support, and are always happy to have a chat- 07894 167 965 or 07754 700 604. They also have a drop in every Thursday (term time only) 11am- 12 at Shoebury Youth centre, Delaware Rd, SS3 9NS
