Pip’s next chapter – ABSS’ larger than life and loveable mascot

Published on: June 3, 2026

From conception to creation Pip represented a wonderful journey in co-production. Capturing the embodiment of a child’s imagination, Pip was inspired and created by ABSS (A Better Start Southend) parents and their children. Pip became a key figure in linking children to the ABSS programme in Southend and attended many public events.

It felt only right that Pip should have a suitable conclusion to their journey. Too big to be hosted as a full-size piece, Pip was lovingly reworked as a 3D hanging artwork by its original costume creator, then gifted and welcomed to Southend Hospital. Pip is now displayed in the corridor of Neptune Ward with much thanks to the Play Specialist and Assistants for making this happen.
