Our Community Builder, Chiquitta, has been helping local young people make the most of free bus travel across Southend last month, giving them greater freedom to get out, explore and enjoy new experiences.

For many families, the cost of travel can be a real barrier to taking part in activities or getting out and about. The free bus travel scheme has helped ease some of that pressure, making it easier for young people to visit friends, access activities and discover places they may not otherwise have been able to reach.

As part of her work in the community, Chiquitta has joined young people on a number of outings, including a recent trip to Hadleigh Country Park, where the group had the opportunity to try mountain biking. It was a great chance for them to spend time outdoors, try something different and enjoy the experience together.

Chiquitta has also seen how the scheme has helped young people build confidence and independence. Some have been making their own journeys around Southend, while others have travelled to neighbouring towns and even further afield to places such as Chelmsford.

Being able to hop on a bus without worrying about the cost has opened up new opportunities for young people to socialise, take part in activities and explore more of what their local area has to offer.

It has been fantastic to see how something as simple as free bus travel can make such a positive difference. Through her Community Builder role, Chiquitta has been able to see first-hand the confidence, independence and new experiences the scheme has helped create for local young people.
